The first thousand days of life are particularly critical for the intestinal flora . Prenatal exposure to microbes has a major impact on fetal development , partly due to hormonal changes that alter the mother’s gut microbiota and partly due to epigenetic mechanisms .

Diet (particularly during the postpartum period) and the style of delivery, as well as perinatal antibiotic therapy , might also affect the early microbial colonization and the development of suitable intestinal defense systems . Allergy , autoimmune illness and brain function , among other things , can later in life be impacted by these .

The first section of this article focuses on the human microbiome’s development in utero and the significance of a newborn’s gut’s normal colonization for immunological development and disease prevention . The second section covers clinical disorders linked to dysbiosis as well as the normal growth of gut microbiota . The oligosaccharides and evolution of human milk are both topics covered in the last chapters .
